EDRM were commissioned to explore design options to convert an existing steel-framed building - known as Public Warehouse No. 1 - into an Academy of Yacht Building for Ipswich based Spirit Yachts.
The existing building was designed in c.1880 as a storage facility located on New Cut East and has not been in use for many years. The proposal is to re-clad the existing structural frame to retain the existing look of the building. New openable glazing will be inserted into the existing ground floor openings to allow views into the workshop as well for removal of the completed boats.
The Academy would provide a degree-level training programme for young people to develop both traditional and modern timber boat-building skills.
